Travelling Safely projects

Projects which have been revised and taken forward separately

In June 2023 Councillors on the Transport and Environment Committee agreed to remove four schemes from the wider Travelling Safely area based ETROs and to consider revisions to the layouts of these schemes before proceeding with advertising individual ETROs for each scheme. The revised schemes will therefore be introduced as new trials, lasting up to 18 months. Councillors agreed that in developing the revised designs the aims of the individual schemes should not be diluted.

These four schemes were:

Braid Road and the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Connection

Where the Council developed options to re-design the scheme which were shared with local residents as part of a public engagement exercise in Autumn 2023. Councillors on the Transport and Environment Committee considered the results of this engagement in March 2024. The proposed changes will remove the road closures on Braid Avenue, Braid Road and Hermitage Gardens and introduce protected cycleways on Hermitage Drive and Braid Avenue, alongside speed reduction measures and other improvements in the area. The road closures will not be removed until after the new measures have been put in place.

The Council is currently preparing to deliver the agreed option under an ETRO, however as decided by Councillors on the Transport and Environment Committee in April 2024, the ETRO will include the option to re-introduce road closures during the trial period should this be required.

.

Comiston Road

Where the Council has drawn up plans to improve the layout at two key side roads to improve safety. The changes will see the layouts at Comiston Springs Avenue and Braid Hills Road upgraded using permanent materials as part of the Council’s ongoing Dropped Kerbs and Crossings Programme. .

Silverknowes Road North

Where the Council has drawn up plans to re-open the road to general traffic in both directions, alongside a narrower protected cycleway.

Silverknowes Road South

Where the Council has drawn up plans to remove the quiet route for cyclists via Silverknowes Court and Silverknowes Place, and instead provide a direct cycle route along Silverknowes Road. This will involve introducing Double Yellow Line restrictions along Silverknowes Road for most of its length between Silverknowes Parkway and Silverknowes Crescent. Parking will be prohibited in the affected area but it will still be possible to stop to pick up or drop off passengers or load/ unload goods from the kerbside. Parking will be retained near the shops and the block of flats by Silverknowes Court. .

The revised layouts for all of these schemes will be advertised via individual ETROs for each scheme. .
