Reusable nappies guide

Why choose reusable nappies

Reusable nappies

  • are reliable
  • are comfortable
  • are easy to use
  • can be cheaper than disposables
  • provide better padding when your baby starts to walk
  • prevent waste.

Reusable nappies have changed a lot since their beginnings as a terry cloth square. Today’s reusable nappies are simple one-piece systems which are absorbent, waterproof and fasten with velcro or poppers. They don't need soaking and can be washed in a normal washing machine.

Comfort

Reusable nappies can fit better than disposables and are made of soft material next to baby’s skin.

Reliability

They have less “spillages” and better containment due to elasticated waists and legs. They can be more absorbent meaning less changes and less risk of nappy rash due to the soft material.

Natural protection

Disposable nappies often contain

  • dyes
  • perfumes
  • absorbency chemicals
  • gels

but a cotton nappy lined with fleece will keep your baby dry with no harsh chemicals.

Save money

You could save an average of £600 to £800 by using cloth nappies until your child is potty trained. You could save more if you reuse them with your next baby or buy the nappies second hand.

Better for the environment

Conventional disposable nappies are made from a combination of plastics which are not recyclable and will end up as waste. Your child could use 4,000 of these disposable nappies during the first two and a half years of their life in comparison to 20 to 30 reusable nappies. All nappies have some environmental impact, but by choosing reusable nappies, washing them at 40°C and air drying them, you can minimise your environmental impact. From a sanitary perspective, it is also much better for sewage to be processed via the toilet and washing machine rather than going in your household waste bin.
