UK Parliamentary Election 2024: Guidance on count procedures for candidates, election agents and counting agents

Declaration

After consultation with the candidates and election agents, the Returning Officer (RO) will announce the votes cast for all candidates and declare the candidate with most votes as the individual elected to be the Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Candidates will be asked to join the RO on the stage where he will announce the number of votes cast for each candidate, and the number of rejected votes and declare that the candidate with the largest number of votes has been elected to serve as Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Candidates will line up on the stage in the order they are listed on the ballot paper from left to right.

The winning candidate will be given the opportunity to make a short speech. Because of the number of counts ongoing in the Highland Hall and the various announcements that need to be made, speeches are limited to the winning candidate. There will be opportunities for all candidates to speak to the media following the declarations.

The Returning Officer staff will pass an information pack to the winning candidate detailing their instructions for attending Parliament so the candidate should remain in the hall until they have received this pack.
